About David Ling
Expertise I have 40 year`s experience tasting, collecting and enjoying wines as an amateur enthusiast. Bordeaux and Port are my particular loves and I regularly buy and sell at auction. I have a good library and frequently participate in on-line discussions.
I can only help with valuations, buying or selling if you tell me where you live as there are many variations around the world.
Experience I would not feel confident answering questions on German wines or those of the USA, South Africa or Australia. But please check me out on "Browse Past Answers" at the top of this page to see if I'm the one you want to help on everything else! (PLEASE don't forget to tell me where you are if you want my estimation of value or help buying or selling!)
Organizations I am manager of the http://groups.msn.com/BordeauxCentral web site and can promise a warm welcome if you drop by. I also participate regularly on several other discussion groups.

Question I have a 1981 bottle of Monsieur Henri Chau Yon-Figeac Saint Emilion Grand Cru Classe'. I recieved this bottle when I got marrried in 1981 and was wondering if the taste would still be good and if there is any value if we hold on to it till we are married longer.
Answer Hi Cathy,
Yon-Figeac is a well-regarded St-Emilion largely planted with Merlot but with a substantial amount of Cabernet Franc. It is usually at its best before ten years of bottle age so I'm afraid your '81 may now be well past its peak - especially as the vintage was no better than average in St-Emilion.
A single bottle would be difficult to sell in most countries so I'd be inclined to open it soon in the hope that my fears are not well-founded.
But you might want to have something else on stand-by in case you don't want to finish the bottle.
Sorry if you hoped for better news.
Regards,
David
