Wine - wine bottle

Expert: Joshua Farrell - 3/1/2008

Question
We have a large bottle in the shape of a rifle or gun approx 1 metre tall of unopened red wine.  It has a gold and red label on the neck with Marchio Nazionale on it, but unfortunately the original label on the front of the bottle has worn off.  We know it is at least of 1968 vintage.  Can you give us any info at all.
Thanks
Judy

Answer
Judy,
This question isn't really about wine but about novelty glass and ceramic ware. Many of these items were produced in Italy in the 50's and 60's as souvenirs and memorabilia. The wine inside was never really intended to be drunk and so would have been of a poor quality. It certainly would not be drinkable now and this item would not have any value to a wine collector. The item may have some value to someone who collects such kitsch memorabilia items. You would be best advised to check ebay or other sites where such items are traded.
