Subject: Tokaji Szamorodni
Question I am currently considering a 1928 Tokaji Szamorodni (sweet) on ebay. I know Tokaji Aszu ages quite well but do not know this wine. The contents have lost about an inch over time, I was wondering if this means the wine has spoiled due to exposure to air. Thanks, tgs.
Answer Hi Csaba
These wines do age quite well, but with a wine this old, you really have no idea how well it has held up. I love Tokaji Azsu, and this one was made before WWII, when the production was really damaged by the Russians. The ullage ( the lower fill level ) isn't a complete disaster...but all of these elements make me nervous. If I knew more about where it was stored, and under what conditions, I would be more adventurous about this...
I hope that helps. I think this might be worth $150 as a gamble---and be sure it is a gamble--but I wouldn't pay much more than that...unless I was born in 1928!
