Wine - wine bottle

Expert: Paul Wagner - 11/2/2009

Question
I own a bottle of VINO TOSCANO DANTE wine in a 3 liter long neck bottle which stands 45 inches tall. It is an original bottle which has never been opened and is complete with the straw basket covering on the bottom.
I have no idea of value or even if it would be potable. Can anyone help? I would guess this is well over 50 years old.
Thanks very much in advance

Answer
HI Paul

You are right to question the drinkability of this bottle.  These tall bottles were made as merchandising displays for restaurants, and they were never really meant for  human consumption.  I'm not saying the wine wasn't safe, just that it was very low grade stuff, since the goal was simply to fill the bottle with something that was the right color.

The answer to your question is that the bottle isn't worth much, and the wine inside is really pretty bad.  I am sorry that I don't have better news for you.  These occasionally come up on ebay for about $40, but I don't know how many of them actually sell!
