Wine/Chatau Lascombes

David I have a bottle of chateau lascombes grand cru classic 1977
and would like to know more about this wine and year. will it be a good wine to keep.

Hi Nigel,

I'm afraid '77 was an awful year so this is now seriously into decline. Furthermore, it comes from a low-point in Lascombes's history - when it was run by brewers Bass Charrington as a visitor centre - from which it only started to recover when they disposed of it in 2001. (See

It certainly isn't a keeper and I don't think much pleasure awaits you if you were to open it so my instinct would be to offer it for sale without a reserve in the hope that a buyer might appear.

These people might be able to help if the bottle is pristine in terms of level, label and capsule:

1: Bid for Wine ( - a popular UK on-line auction system.
2: Hartley's in Ilkley (
3: Tennant's in Leyburn (

(But the potential value may not reach their minimum thresholds.)

Sorry if you thought you had a valuable gem.

I have 40 year`s experience tasting, collecting and enjoying wines as an amateur enthusiast. Bordeaux and Port are my particular loves and I regularly buy and sell at auction. I have a good library and frequently participate in on-line discussions. I can only help with valuations, buying or selling if you tell me where you live as there are many variations around the world.

I would not feel confident answering questions on German wines or those of the USA, South Africa or Australia. But please check my prestige rating and browse "Browse Past Answers" at the top of this page to see if I'm the one you want to help on everything else! (PLEASE don't forget to tell me where you are if you want my estimation of value or help buying or selling!)

I also participate regularly on several other discussion groups.
