Question
David,
A good friend recently died leaving a wonderful cellar of aged mostly high quality German wines.  I'm trying to find out what they are worth and how to sell them.  They were stored in a cool dark cellar with no motion.  Please look over the list and give me your advice..

Answer
Hi Ross,

I don't do questions on German wines but it's clear from the value of some of the others that this collection deserves professional appraisal and valuation as potential auction lots, perhaps by Wine Commune (http://www.winecommune.com/).

Some particular stars that caught my eye:

1983 d'Yquem halves should attract bids above $200 each.
1985 Pichon Lalande = $150 + each.
1983 Cristal = $300 + each.

(All assuming pristine bottles with good levels, labels, capsules and color - as they should be from the storage you describe.)

Don't forget to allow for their commission charges.

Good luck!

David

Expertise

I have 40 year`s experience tasting, collecting and enjoying wines as an amateur enthusiast. Bordeaux and Port are my particular loves and I regularly buy and sell at auction. I have a good library and frequently participate in on-line discussions. I can only help with valuations, buying or selling if you tell me where you live as there are many variations around the world.

Experience

I would not feel confident answering questions on German wines or those of the USA, South Africa or Australia. But please check my prestige rating and browse "Browse Past Answers" at the top of this page to see if I'm the one you want to help on everything else! (PLEASE don't forget to tell me where you are if you want my estimation of value or help buying or selling!)

I also participate regularly on several other discussion groups.
