ANSWER: Hi Heidi,

You don't say if you are asking me how much I think you could hope to raise by selling these or how much you'd have to pay to replace them so I'll start with the latter as not all would be easy to sell. (I've marked those thus: *)

1. 1984 Chateau de Beaucastel
Chateauneuf du Pape = $55, plus taxes.

2.  1981 Clos Fortet
St. Emilion 1er Gran Cru Classe = N/A (Old; current vintages $60+)

3.  1981 Nebbiolo d'Alba
Ceretto = N/A (Very old; current vintages around $12) *

4.  1983 Chateau Beard La Chapelle
Saint Emilion Grand Cru = N/A (Old; current vintages around $50)

6.  Chateau Figeac
St. Emilion, Premier Grand Cru Classe = Around $200, depending on the vintage.

7.  1998 Barton & Guestier
Saint Emilion = N/A (Current vintages around $15) *

8.  1985 Chateau Pavie
Saint Emilion Grand Cru = $145

9.  1992 Chateau Lynch Bages
Grand Cru Classe  Pauillac = $140

10.  1970 Chateau La Tour St. Bonnet
1er Cru Bourgeois Medoc = N/A (Current vintages around $15)

11.  1966 Chateau Margaux = $400+

12.  1954 Martini Lacrima Christi = N/A (Very old; current vintages around $15) *

13.  1979 Chateau L'Angelus
St. Emilion Grand Cru Classe = N/A (Current vintages $200+)

14.  1982 Chateau grand Pontet
Saint Emilion Grand Cru Classe = N/A (Current vintages $25+)

15.  1981 Chateau Simard
Saint Emilion  = N/A (Old, current vintages $25+)

I don't think you'd have problems selling this collection via Wine Commune (http://www.winecommune.com/) if that's in your mind as it includes enough stars, such as the Margaux and Lynch Bages, for them to be interested in appraising them as potential auction lots. (They may want to exclude those I've marked with * though.)

Or you could try Wine Gavel (http://www.winegavel.com/)

(Don't forget to allow for commission.)

Regards,

David

QUESTION: Thank you so much.  If we sold them would their sale prices likely be comparable to the replacement prices?  Do you have any idea what a typical commission fee would be?

Thank you again.

Heidi

Answer
Hi Heidi,

Auction hammer prices seldom reach retail I'm afraid - and much will depend on the condition of the bottles in terms of color, level, label and capsule.

I don't know Wine Commune's current commission rate I'm afraid but 15% would be typical, and they may need to charge additionally for cataloging and insurance - all assuming that the potential value they see here exceeds their minimum threshold.

Regards,

David
