Subject: Endurance athlete weight maintenance

Question
I am 38 years old and am a recreational figure skater. I have skated for fun
for a few years but about six months ago I upped my training time. I now
train about 8-10 hours per week, 4-6 of that intensively and the rest is more
moderate to easy. I started losing weight quite rapidly at first which didn't
bother me at first, but I started getting the shakes during my training, so I
changed my diet after reading a few articles so that I time my meals to my
workouts, eg one normal meal 2 hours before ice time and then one small
meal immediately coming off the ice. I eat three smallish meals per day and
and then a larger dinner. I probably consume 1800-2000 calories per day -
more if I eat one of these meals at a restaurant and have a few drinks!
So my question is my weight is now 136 lbs and I really don't want to lose any
more. But my weight is not really stabilising. I'm still losing 1/2 to 1 lb per
week. I don't have a huge appetite and I find eating rather boring. I don't
want to cut my cardio at the moment. Can I just supplement my current
meals with more fat to get my calories up? Then when I reach a stage where
my cardio drops I can just cut the added fat. Is this a good theory or a dumb
one?

Hi Melissa,
Thank you for your question.
I believe that you may be training too intensely and that is why you are losing so much weight.
Why don't you reduce your intensive training by about an hour each week and take a protein shake to get more calories.
If you expend less calories and consume more calories-hopefully your weight will stabilize.
