Women`s Health/Spotting versus menstruation

Question
How can you tell the difference between spotting and menstruation? 3 days ago, I noticed faint brown spotting when I went to the bathroom. My period had ended 10 days before then, so this was odd to me. (Note: I'm not on any birth control.) I've been spotting since then (3 days ago), but it has now grown heavier and turned into a brighter red color. I've never really spotted before, so I can't tell if this is normal spotting or turning into a period. But if I am getting my period again, I'm worried that it's coming so soon, since 10 days isn't a normal cycle...

Any thoughts/advice would be great! Thanks!
