Women`s Health - Painful Hips When Lying on Sides

Expert: Catherine Martin - 6/24/2006

Question
Hi, Catherine...

I am a 44 year-old female.  I have slept on my sides for many years now.  Over the past few months I have started to wake up constantly throughout the night with my hips aching severely.  I may or may not be on my period at the times this happens.  My right side particularly hurts the most.  The pain in it seems to carry over into my low to mid abdomen.  Surgeries include tubal ligation over 10 years ago and an appendectomy where they actually had to open my abdomen because they could not find my appendix.  The surgeon said it had dried up like a prune and was hidden behind my right ovary.  I began the perimenopause phase at the very early age of 28 (my Mom did at 29).  Do you have any idea what could be causing the pain in my hip(s)?

Carol

Answer
carol;

when you say hip and your doctor says hip,you may be talking about two differnet places. to most people,hip pain can refer to pain in the side of the upper thigh or the side of the upper buttocks-the area right around the curvy part of a women. but to a doctor,hip pain means pain felt in the groin-where the hip joint itself lies.

hip pain can be tricky to decipher for other reasons. you can feel pain deep in the hip joint itself. you can feel pain in the tissues around the joint-in a bursa,for example.[the bursae are fluid-filled sacs that cushion the bony part of the hip close to the surface. if a hip's bursae become inflammed,you have bursitis].there tendons around the hip,too,tying it to the legs and the back. and these can also become inflammed[often after an injury],a condition called tendinitis. and the pain in your hip doesnt have to start there. you might have
'referred' pain-you feel it in your hip,but the source is somewhere else,like your back. the cause of hip pain can even be outside your body; a too-soft mattress or ill-fitting shoes;

arthritis is a common cause of hip pain. usually its osteoarthritis-the wear-and-tear kind that affects almost everyone to some degree as they get older. its possible,too though less common,that rheumatoid arthritis is making its presence known in your hip.

so,as you see,this could be from alot of things. i feel its best to see your doctor,for proper treatment plan.
heres somethings that could help you as you wait for an appointment with the doctor;
-use heat to soothe your hip pain.
-smooth on a deep-heating ointment.
-hot shower,running on the hips,or a tub soak;

sorry i cant do more;
