Woodworking - Dremel Lettering Guide for Plunge Router

Expert: maura macaluso - 11/10/2008

Question
I have a Dremel #395 Variable Speed Tool with a Router Base attachment.  I wish to make signs and need to know where to find a letter templet guide that will work for this small hobby machine.  Also I need to know where I can purchase collars for the same router base.  Thanks in advance for your comments.

Answer
Hi Richard, First, to answer the easy question.  Extra collars for the router base are not sold anywhere but can be ordered directly through the parts ordering division at dremel.

Parts Ordering

Most repair parts can be ordered from the Dremel Service Centers listed. Call the appropriate Service Center for availability and pricing. Be sure to have the model number and type number (usually found on the tool's nameplate) of your tool handy when calling. Please allow 5 to 7 days for delivery. No COD. Please have your credit card handy when calling. Parts prices are subject to change without notice.

The other part of your question is a bit more tricky and may not satisfy you at all.  There are no lettering guides or templates manufactured for your particular dremel.  There is an engraving kit that dremel makes but it is a piston driven unit not a rotary tool.

Dremel Engraver Kit - 290-01 Full Description
Dremel Engraver Kit 290-01. Features Stroke adjustment dial regulates engraving depth from fine lines to deep grooves, Replaceable carbide point lets you engrave on most surfaces, Optional 9929 diamond point (not included) for heavy-duty use on hard surfaces, Letter/Number template helps etch words and numbers, Soft grip adds extra comfort and control, Light and compact design provides comfortable use for precision engraving performance, Two year warranty. Includes Engraver Kit - 290-01, Letter/Number Template, Carbide Point - 9924.

What is available on the market is a lettering system guide and template for full size routers and some laminate trimmers.  It is possible that the faceplate guide can be attached to your dremel router by simply drilling holes in its baseplate that will match up to the mounting holes on your dremel base.  You would need to order the system, check it out for yourself and before actually drilling into it, decide if it would be workable or not.  If not, you can simply return for refund it minus any shipping costs of course.

You can even make your own templates if so inclined.  There is a discussion on the Dremel board which may be helpful in some way, for you.

Thanks for an interesting question, sorry I couldn't be more helpful to you. Good Luck with your project.
