Woodworking - Restaining veneer kitchen cabinets

Expert: Greg Scholl - 11/17/2008

Question
My kitchen veneer cupboards are about 35 years old and yet they are very strong, I feel like i am living in the 70's so I wanted to know if I could re-stain them like an Ebony stain  (now they are like a golden brown stain) and if so should they also be varnished. One last question...the handles are placed in the middle of the cupboard door I would like to move them to the corner of the door SO how do I fill in the screw holes????

Answer
Hi Antonette, what you're proposing is a HUGE job. The cabinets will need to be stripped down to bare wood. They will need stain and clear coats, and that has to be done well in order to end up with a professional looking result. Not an easy task. Trying to hide holes in the middle of the doors will also be nearly impossible. The best way to do it is to fill them with a plug of the same wood and orient the grain properly, but this is fairly advanced woodworking, and even with a good job, they will likely still be visible to a certain extent. Cabinet finishing is a highly skilled endeavor, as they need a tough, furniture grade finish, done right to look nice, and trying to do this while they are already hung is a huge undertaking. In most cases, it is not worth the effort, and you'd be far better off refacing or replacing them. I know that's a lot more expensive, but good cabinets will last you 20-30 years, and maintain their good looks and functionality. Hope that helps a little- post back if need be- regards- Greg
