Question Hello. I have a slab of cedar approx 4 ft wide 7 ft long and 4 inches thick that my father cut about 43 years ago. It has never been finished. He carried around with us everywhere we moved. He passed away last year and I inherited it. I would like to make a desk out of it. what do suggest for a finish? It has some worm holes so those need to be dealt with to give it a smooth finish.
Answer Hi Kim, that's a serious chunk of wood...I would steer you towards a modified Tung oil product called Waterlox. This is a penetrating finish that soaks into the wood and hardens from the inside, the more coats the more "build" to the finish. They also are easy to apply evenly which will be important on such a large expanse of surface area, and because it's a penetrating finish, it won't flake, chip, or peel, and additional coats can be added to "renew" the surface during the life of the piece. It's imperative to coat all sides of the piece to seal it well. Hope that helps, visit the site and read about this excellent product- regards- Greg
