Question Hi Greg,
I have recently acquired an old cedar chest. I'm assuming about 92 years old. The chest is all cedar, and is very very dirty. Is there anything I can use to clean it with? I'm worried about compromising the integrity of the cedar itself. One I get it clean, do you have any recommendations on what I could put on it to bring out the beautiful color of the cedar?
Answer Hi Shaun, is this a commercially made chest? You can try some mineral spirits and 0000 steel wool, but what you likely have is an old finish, probably varnish, that won't clean. You'll likely need to get much more invasive to get it to look good.(meaning refinishing)If it's a Lane, there still in business, and they can tell you the age by the serial # and Style # which will be on the bottom of the chest. It's also important that you get a replacement lock if it is a Lane, as they've had a recall on the latch for many, many years, and they record every chest that gets retrofitted with the new latch.Post back- regards- Greg
