Fine furniture restorer and cabinet maker for over 30 years,serving high end Antique dealers, Interior designers, Collectors in the CT area. Sold, built, serviced, setup Home,Industrial and Commercial stationary woodworking tools for a major tool retailer in CT. for three years, sold hand and power tools, and offered instruction on use and care as well.I even have some Trade show Demo experience.

Question
Hi- I received a hand-me-down glossy oak colored piano. I want to know if I can use minwax polyshades to stain it a mahogany color. Do I need to sand it? What paint brush do you suggest? Thanks!

HI Anila, I wouldn't suggest using Polyshades over an existing finish, unless you're sure what that finish is...if it's lacquer for instance, you definitely should not apply a Ploy over it. I am also NOT a big fan of the Polyshades...I've never seen what I would call a "professional" looking job with that stuff...you also wont be able to change the real color with it...only a shade or two, and to go from yellowish Oak to Deep red Mahogany is not possible with a product like that....it isn't a stain really...it's a colored poly.
