Woodworking - stripping and refinishing wormy chestnut

Question
I have been given a small amount of wormy chestnut. Sadly, this beautiful wood was "pickled" or white washed. I am not sure what to call it. I would like to repurpose the wood, but want to restore it to its natural beauty. I have never taken on a project such as this. Is this a something a beginner can do or should I just pay an expert? If appropriate for a novice, can you recommend the best way to do this?

Hi Wendi,it will depend on how deep the pickling has gone into the grain, is the back of the boards pickled also? You could have someone run them through a thickness planer if there's enough material to remove and still leave you with a usable thickness.....
