Woodworking/How Do I Make An Outside Plaque for House

Question
QUESTION: I just purchased 2'x2'x1/2" piece of birch wood - I want to draw a picture on the wood, then cut it to make an outside plaque. Question 1 - Is birch wood good for outside plaques; Question 2 - When & how do I seal the wood. Before I paint, cut? Question 3 - Would acrylic or toll paint work for this plaque?   Thanks.

ANSWER: It sounds like you've purchased Birch plywood. If it is, it's not suitable for exterior applications. You'll need to buy panels of an Exterior plywood, because they're made with exterior glues. After all the cutting and sanding is done, a good exterior primer would be in order, followed by the Acrylic paint, Thed better you seal it, especially around the edges, the longer it will last. Hope that helps a little- post back if need be- Greg

QUESTION: Reply to your email. Could you please recommend what type of exterior plywood would be good? Pine, Oak, etc. Thanks.

Answer
You'll really only find Pine exterior plywood at the local Home Center, and only certain grades will give you a smooth surface on one side...a lumber yard can provide you with several choices in a Marine plywood,(Teak, Mahogany, etc) but at a pretty hefty price tag....and no partial sheets, you'll have to buy a 4'x8' sheet, likely, but they may sell smaller sheets. The other option is solid wood like Teak, Mahogany, or pressure treated Yellow Pine, but in order to make a large panel you'd have to glue together a few planks using an exterior glue and  a spline or biscuits perhaps.........
