Question I have a question about staining my recently opened-up ceiling. House built in 1868, and have opened up the ceiling to expose original pine ceiling and beams. Wood is of course darkened with age. Would like to use Winter White stain on it. Can I use the white stain on this darkened wood? Wood has never been finished.
Answer Hi Kristy, the stain will likely soak in and disappear, without giving you much effect at all. It will likely just look a little milky, and actually darken the wood more. These beams will be very dry and oxidized, and will soak up anything like a sponge. It will also tend to make them darker, as this is the nature of the wood when this old. You can do a test on a small area, the size of a quarter or so, in an out of the way place to see what effect it will have.Best of luck- post back if need be- Greg
