Woodworking - refinishing a wood laminate dining table

Expert: Greg Scholl - 6/23/2009

Question
We have a wood laminate table that has many places scratched off through the years.  We'd like to refinish it, but don't know if it can even be done.  I've tried using stains...just doesn't look good.  Can it be stripped off and re-finished?

Answer
You should be able to strip it and refinish easily, as long as we're talking about a real wood veneer. You can't stain over an existing finish, staining must be done at the raw wood level as a general rule, so that's why it wasn't successful...hope that helps- post back if need be- regards- Greg
