Question
a collection of nickels and dimes is $3.30. there are 42 coins in all. how many of each kid of coin are there

Answer
If they were all dimes, that would be $4.20.
For each nickel added and dime subtracted, that makes it 5c less.

It needs to be 4.20 - 3.30 = 90c less.

This means that we need 90/5 = 18 nickels.

Given we have 18 nickels, we only have 42-18 = 24 dimes.

24 dimes are $2.40 and 18 nickels is 90c, so $2.40 + $0.90 = $3.30,
