Word Problems - welding/math

Expert: Scott A Wilson - 10/20/2009

Question
A tensile test was performed on a 0.505 inch diameter standard tensile bar machined from a weld deposit. The maximum load in tension was 15,000 pounds. The tensile strength of the weld would be:  A. 75,000 psi. B: 30,000psi. C. 15,000 psi D.37,500psi.

Answer
If the diameter of the bar was d = 0.505, the radius is r = 0.505/2 = .2525.
This makes the area = πrē = 0.200 inē.

Gee, wasn't that a nice diameter.

The answere is 15,000 pounds/0.200 inē.
Dividing by 0.2 is the same as multiplying by 5, and 5*15 = 75, so the answer is 75,000 psi.

Looks like A to me.
