Question
This is a question my son cant figure out and I cant help can you please.
At 9:30 a.m. Andrew left homer for Portsmouth cycling at 12 mi/h. At 10:00 a.m. Stacy left Portsmouth for Homer cycling at 16 mi/h. The distance from homer to portsmouth is 20 mi. find the time when they meet.  We set it up but it doesn't match the book answer. Any help would be appreciated. Randy

Answer
At 10, A has gone 6 miles, so there are 14 miles left between them.
The speed combined is 12+16 = 28.

Since there are only 14 left, and 14 is half of 28,
that means there is half an hour until they meet.

After half an hour, Andrew has gone 6 more miles, plus his original 6, for a total of 6+6=12.
After half an hour, Statcy has gone 8 miles.

We can see this is right since 6+8=14, +6 at the start by Andrew, is 20.
