Question 1. A recipe for strawberry punch calls for 1/5(qt) of ginger ale and 3/5(qt) of strawberry soda.
a) how much liquid is needed?
b) If the recipe is doubled, how much liquid is needed?
c) If the recipe is halved, how much liquid is needed?
Thank you for helping me. If it is possible can you show me step by step how you got the answer. Math is not my best subject but I am trying so hard to learn.
Answer a) Well, it calls for one fifth of a quart and three fifths of a quart.
Since the fractions are 1/5 and 3/5, the denominators are the same and the units are the same,
add them together and get 4/5. So the recipe calls for 4/5 qt. of liquid.
b) If the recipe is doubled, multiply this amount by 2 and get 8/5 = 1 3/5 quarts.
You could also double the 1/5 and 3/5 and get 2/5 and 6/5.
Add them up and the answer is still 8/5.
c) If it is halved, that means to divide by 2. Take (4/5)/2 and get 4/(2*5) = 2/5.
