Question
please help! im so confused

A single-engine plane started out in high tail winds and made a trip of 500 km in 2 hours. On the return trip, the pilot was forced to land after 45 minutes, having only traveled only 75 km. What was the rate of the plane in still air? What was the rate of the wind?

Answer
(v+w) = 500/2 = 250 km/h

*********
I'll assume the wind hasn't abated on the return trip though it isn't stated clearly in the problem.

t = .75h
d = 75km

(v-w) = 75/.75 = 100 km/h

v -w + v + w = 250 + 100
2v = 350
v = 175 km/h
w = 75 km/h

That is some heavy wind!  What was that pilot thinking?  That is tropical storm force winds.  I'd call the FAA.  :)

Let me know if I can help further.
