Hi! I have this word problem on my take-home test that I don't know what to do with. We haven't done anything like it in class.

Madison is paid time-and-a-half for hours worked in excess of 40 hours and double-time for hours worked on Sunday. If Madison had gross weekly wages of $396 for working 49 hours, 3 of which were on Sunday, what is her regular hourly rate?

Hello Rosalynd,

Let x = Madison's regular pay rate, then

1.5x = the time-and-a-half rate, and

2x = the double-time rate

She worked a total of 49 hours, 3 on Sunday...so, 6 hrs must be at the time-and-a-half rate.

Thus, her total wages are:

40x + 6*1.5x +3*2x = 396

==> 40x + 9x + 6x = 396

==> 55x = 396

==> x = 7.2 or $7.20 per hour

OK?

Abe
