I'm almost 30 and still single. I would like to take this opportunity to excel in IT as well as music.
I have been working as a software developer for just over 6 years now. I'm not 100% happy as I believe if IT was my passion, I would have gotten into a higher position by now. However, I do not completely dislike my job. I probably lack the proactiveness. And because IT line pays well, I do not think it wise to give it up so easily.
On the other hand. I have a strong interest in wanting to perform in an orchestra. And I have recently started taking violin lessons. I know it would be unrealistic to think I could perform anytime soon, I also do not wish to give up on this dream either.
Ideally, in 5 years time, I would like to be a well paid senior IT specialist, as well as, being a part-time musician.
But the current situation is that I'm beginning to feel the pinch of not having kept up with IT technology and have not put in continuous effort in brushing up my people skills. As a developer, it's not a necessity to be an expert speaker. But I believe I would be a happier person if I had the talent. And I figure it is also because of my lack of ability to socialize, I can't seem to handle certain personalities at work. This is a major drawback when I have to work with that specific kind of individuals who demand a more talkative person in nature.
As I'm currently seeking new work environment, I'm not surprised that I have not had successful interviews. I often get through the first interview, where personality wise, I was acceptable. However, I usually don't get pass the second interviews where they either give you a test or question skills in a more in-depth manner. Therefore, I have started to study some IT courses to get the skills in demand. However, I seemed to have negative thoughts such as, I won't be able to catch up with my peers who've already achieved much more at my age. Also, I've been quite reluctant to ask my boss for his/her permission to put them down as a referee on my CV. Is it a normal practice to only ask for the favor before or after resignation? Somehow, I didn't think either way, they would help me. What's the norm? How do people get referees on their CV? Whenever I have these demotivating talk in my head, I just feel trapped in my current state.
I've thought of quitting my job before looking for a new one just to feel less guilty while job hunting at work. But many has said it's not wise to do so.
I wanted another job because of many reasons. I feel like a change of environment. I wanted a higher pay. I wanted to work with different people. I wanted to try out different roles. I'm not sure if I should discuss these requirements with my present employer, because I've been told by friends that it would get me further by trying out different companies.
Are my goals realistic? If yes, what would be the ways to achieve them?
Thank you in advance.
Answer Suzie G,
I apologize for the delay in responding to your question.
I believe you are asking me two quesions....
1.) References - if you are actively looking for a new job and your boss already knows it, then you might ask if you can put them down as a reference. If you are looking will hoping to maintain your current position until you land a new job, then you might ask if you could use them in the future.
2.) Are your goals realistic? -- That is a question only you can answer...if you are passionate about what you want, then anything is possible. If you have the time and dedication to put into those things that you want, then anything is possible. As for achieving them....you have to dedicated yourself to what you want.
