Topic: World News

Expert: James Bruno
Date: 5/10/2008
Subject: Modern-day Marginalisation

Question
Would you be able to give me examples of current or fairly recent events to do with racism and/or marginalisation e.g. what's happening in Tibet.

Answer
Stacie:

Here are three that come to mind, each representing one societal level:

Individual Marginalization: the exclusion of individuals with disabilities from the labour force.

Community:  marginalization of indigenous populations as a result of historical conquest and discrimination (e.g. Aborigines in Australia, Indians in the Americas).

Global/Structural:  Immigration - denial to immigrants of access to public housing, health care benefits, employment services, and social security benefits. Illegal immigrants, in particular, are often viewed as undeserving, or that they must attain legal status before gaining access to basic public services.
