Writing Books/query

I am to send a query with 10 pages of the manuscript. How should the query be written, what should it contain? I have finished a fiction work, but at the same time someone else  said its okay to send a proposal for a nonfiction idea I have and I can't recall having written a proposal. Any tips on how to?

Dear Demetrius:

As much as I'd like to I don't have the time or space here to adequately answer your questions so I'm referring to you two books:

Lisa Collier Cool's book on query letters
Larson's book on the book proposal.

Both of these will give you all the information you need as well as samples to follow.

Good luck!

What is a book proposal and why do I need one? Do I need a book proposal for both nonfiction and fiction books? How do I write a book proposal? What are the required components of a book proposal? What is an overview? What is a synopsis? How do I find out what other books are available on my topic so I can make my book different? How do I pitch to an agent/publisher? What's a query letter? What's a 30-second commercial?
