Writing Books/Using a pseudonym

Question
Hi Susan

You answered a question for me yesterday which was
brilliant, but I have another.
I'm being presumptuous, but I am wondering about using a pseudonym and wonder how I go about this? Do I use it when
contacting agents/publishers? I don't particularly want to
use my own name? Any idea?

Thanks

Answer
Hello Craig:

This question is a bit out of my expertise; I don't usually deal with publication issues (whatever it may say in my biography!) but I certainly would not use a pseudonym when contacting agents or publishers. They have a right to know who they're dealing with! Of course you could present to them like this: "XXX (your own name) followed by "aka (also known as) XXX" (your pseudonym).

The proper time to discuss a pseudonym is when you are offered a contract. If you accept it, you should then tell them that you want to publish under a different name.

The only problem I see with using a pseudonym is financial. If you can arrange for your payments to be made to you under your own name, that would be great. If they insist on paying you under your pseudonym, you will need to set up an account with your bank to receive the money, which is a bit cumbersome. And then there's the IRS...you can easily contact your bank and ask them what you would need to do.

There are a couple of other places where you might get a better answer to this question: http.www.worddistillery.com, and http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/. You will find those people knoweledgeable and more than willing to help.

I hope this helps. If it does, a nice rating would be greatly appreciated. I am proud of my high scores over 1350+ questions.

And good luck with your writing!
