Writing Books/book sales

Question
QUESTION: Hi. Is there a website that shows how many copies of a particular book an author has sold? Thanks

ANSWER: Although I don't know of a site that tracks book sales, http://www.titlez.com allows you to track books' rankings on Amazon.com. Rankings on Amazon, however, are highly volatile and reflect only the book's sales compared to all other books' sales on Amazon at that time.

QUESTION: Also, I was wondering what is considered a successful first book by a new author? Is 250,000 copies completely unrealistic?

Answer
It depends on the type of book, but 250,000 copies would certainly be severely optimistic, especially in today's market. Many smaller publishers don't even print more than 2,000 copies at a time. Large publishers with books by well-known authors, such as David Grisham, Stephen King, or Pat Conroy might print as many as 100,000 copies at a time.
