Writing Books/Beginner-When does the story come?

Question
I want to write a novel but I have no idea what to write about. When I get an idea, its short lived-usually a three sentence paragraph or a ironic scene that seemed to jump in my head. I feel like I'm supposed to write because of these constant impulses to put my thoughts to paper. But as how to see a story, I dont have a clue.

Answer
Dear Joe,
Thank you for your letter. Most writers get those little scenes flashing through our heads. The trick is to write them down in the journal - you have to capture them when they go by. There's always a longer story behind them. At my site I have posted the Ficion Writer's Workshop. YOu can use that to get the story down on paper. If you have any questions while you're working on it, feel free to write back again. See:
