Writing Books/MS Formatting

Question
Hello, Nori.

Generally, I am getting much conflicting advice  on proper manuscript formatting. More specifically, I get much (insistence, either way!) concerning whether (US) editors, agents, etc. want one or two spaces after a period in an MS.

More generally again, can you recommend a good source (Internet or printed) for comprehensive guidance on the subject?

Regards,

Dan O'Hanlon

Answer
Dear Dan,
Thank you for your letter. The best grammar book, which remains the standard grammar book for all kinds of writing is "Elements of Style." You can click on the book cover at my page for writers to see it at Amazon.com:

That is the greatest book in the world. Most writers read it over every few years, especially the section at the end concerning style.
re. number of spaces after a period. When I was in typing class in the 1970s, they made a big point of teaching us to put two spaces after a period. However, once everyone had a personal computer, it shifted to one space after a period. I'm not sure why that is.
I suppose the debate continues, but I rarely ever see a document that uses two spaces after a period anymore.
I hope you enjoy Elements of Style. It is a classic and really one of the best books ever written for writers.
Sincerely,
Nori
