Writing Books/Publishing poetry
My son has written a collection of poetry. Many adults and teachers have read the collection and think that it is worthy for publication. How do I go about doing this?
Thank you for your letter. At my site i have posted an article on how to find a publisher, see: http://steamboats.com
However, most publishers will only publish a poetry collection if the author is already famous. It's a good example of a catch-22.
The best way to become well-known is to start publishing individual poems and save the clippings. There are numerous magazines that will publish poems and you can find many of them in this directory:
The other option is to self-publish, but that's expensive and the books are hard to sell.
I always tell young writers to develop their careers along two tracks: one is to develop their writing skills, and the other is to find some kind of work to do that will support their writing career. It takes many years of hard work and much publishing before a writer can support himself just by writing.
Another course is to go into a career like teaching, journalism, law, or reseach, where they can start to make a name for themselves in the writing world.
I hope this helps,
