Survey studies show that employees are more satisfied when they have challenging opportunities at work. This includes chances to participate in interesting projects, jobs with a satisfying degree of challenge, and opportunities for increased responsibility. Important: this is not simply "promotional opportunity." As organizations have become flatter, promotions can be rare. People have found challenge through projects, team leadership, special assignments - as well as promotions.

1   Promote from within when possible.
2   Reward promising employees with roles on interesting projects.
3   Divide jobs into levels of increasing leadership and responsibility.
It may be possible to create job titles that demonstrate increasing levels of expertise which are not limited by availability of positions. They simply demonstrate achievement.

When negative stress is continuously high, job satisfaction is low. Jobs are more stressful if they interfere with employees' personal lives or are a continuing source of worry or concern.

1   Promote a balance of work and personal lives. Make sure that senior managers model this behavior.
2   Distribute work evenly (fairly) within workteams.
3   Review work procedures to remove unnecessary "red tape" or bureaucracy.
4   Manage the number of interruptions employees have to endure while trying to do their jobs.
5   Some organizations utilize exercise or "fun" breaks at work.

Data from employee satisfaction surveys has shown employees are more satisfied when their managers are good leaders. This includes motivating employees to do a good job, striving for excellence, or just taking action.

1   Make sure your managers are well trained. Leadership combines attitudes and behavior. It can be learned.
2   People respond to managers that they can trust and who inspire them to achieve meaningful goals.

Work Standards
Again, our  employee survey data points out that employees are more satisfied when their entire workgroup takes pride in the quality of its work.

1   Encourage communication between employees and customers. Quality gains importance when employees see its impact on customers.
2   Develop meaningful measures of quality. Celebrate achievements in quality.
Trap: Be cautious of slick, "packaged" campaigns that are perceived as superficial and patronizing.

Fair Rewards
Employees are more satisfied when they feel they are rewarded fairly for the work they do. Consider employee responsibilities, the effort they have put forth, the work they have done well, and the demands of their jobs.

1   Make sure rewards are for genuine contributions to the organization.
2   Be consistent in your reward policies.
3   If your wages are competitive, make sure employees know this.
4   Rewards can include a variety of benefits and perks other than money.
As an added benefit, employees who are rewarded fairly, experience less stress.

Adequate Authority
Employees are more satisfied when they have adequate freedom and authority to do their jobs.

When reasonable:
1   Let employees make decisions.
2   Allow employees to have input on decisions that will affect them.
3   Establish work goals, but let employees determine how they will achieve those goals. Later reviews may identify innovative "best practices."
4   Ask, "If there were just one or two decisions that you could make, which ones would make the biggest difference in your job?"

supplied by one or more superior, peer, colleague,
management person, client, and/or  the general public.

♦ Achievement
- Accomplishment of endeavors  including instances
wherein failures were incurred.
Similarly, instances were included
wherein neither success or failures were incurred.

♦ Possibility of Growth
- Whether a change in status was possible,
irrespective of the fact that the  change could be upward or
downward in status.

♦ Advancement
- Designated an actual  change in job status.

♦ Salary
- All sequences of events in
which compensation plays a major  role.

♦ Interpersonal Relations
- Relationships involving superiors,
subordinates, and peers.

♦ Supervision
- The supervisorís willingness or unwillingness to
delegate responsibility  and/or
willingness to teach subordinates.

♦ Responsibility
- Satisfaction derived from being given control of personal
work or the work of others and/or
new job responsibilities.

♦ Policy and Administration
- Events in which some or all aspects of the
organization were related to job satisfaction.

♦ Working Condition
- Physical  working conditions, facilities, and
quality of work as related to job  satisfaction.

♦ Work Itself
- The actual job
performance  related to job satisfaction

So, how is job satisfaction created? What are the elements of a job that create job satisfaction? Organizations can help to create job satisfaction by putting systems in place that will ensure that workers are challenged and then rewarded for being successful. Organizations that aspire to creating a work environment that enhances job satisfaction need to incorporate the following:
1   Flexible work arrangements, possibly including telecommuting
2   Training and other professional growth opportunities
3   Interesting work that offers variety and challenge and allows the worker opportunities to "put his or her signature" on the finished product
4   Opportunities to use one's talents and to be creative
5   Opportunities to take responsibility and direct one's own work
6   A stable, secure work environment that includes job security/continuity
7   An environment in which workers are supported by an accessible supervisor who provides timely feedback as well as congenial team members
8   Flexible benefits, such as child-care and exercise facilities
9   Up-to-date technology
10   Competitive salary and opportunities for promotion
If job satisfaction is a worker benefit, surely the worker must be able to contribute to his or her own satisfaction and well-being on the job. The following suggestions can help a worker find personal job satisfaction:
1   Seek opportunities to demonstrate skills and talents. This often leads to more challenging work and greater responsibilities, with attendant increases in pay and other recognition.
2   Develop excellent communication skills. Employers value and reward excellent reading, listening, writing, and speaking skills.
3   Know more. Acquire new job-related knowledge that helps you to perform tasks more efficiently and effectively. This will relieve boredom and often gets one noticed.
4   Demonstrate creativity and initiative. Qualities like these are valued by most organizations and often result in recognition as well as in increased responsibilities and rewards.
5   Develop teamwork and people skills. A large part of job success is the ability to work well with others to get the job done.
6   Accept the diversity in people. Accept people with their differences and their imperfections and learn how to give and receive criticism constructively.
7   See the value in your work. Appreciating the significance of what one does can lead to satisfaction with the work itself. This helps to give meaning to one's existence, thus playing a vital role in job satisfaction.
8   Learn to de-stress. Plan to avoid burnout by developing healthy stress-management techniques.
