Writing Plays/Screenwriting - Playwriting/Screenplaywriting?

Expert: Barry Pearson - 10/1/2009

Question
Hi,
I'm a student who has written a couple of plays that people responded really well to and am really interested in trying my hand at writing my own movie. I understand that due to the different nature of film and theatre, there are differences in writing format. I was wondering what those were and if you had any tips on going from one to the other.
Sincerely,
Jose

Answer
Hi Jose,

Plays for the stage are as different from screenplays as chalk from cheese.

It's not a matter of format.  That's just the wrapping on the parcel.  It's what's inside the format that counts.  Only you can judge whether or not your material is suitable for expansion into a screenplay.

If you go to my website www.createyourscreenplay.com you can order my book IT'S ALL ABOUT THE STORY, about 100 pages long, that describes what the archetypal structure of a screenplay is all about.  You can read two chapters on line.

If you order the book, you'll be able to compare your stage story to the type of story needed for the screen, and judge whether or not to invest a substantial amount of work in writing 100 pages of screenplay.

I hope you discover that it's the next SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION, or GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS.

Best of luck,

Barry
