Writing Plays/Screenwriting - selling script

Expert: Roger S. H. Schulman - 10/3/2009

Question
hi
I have done a sci-fi romantic comedy story and now i want to sell it to hollywood, being a first timer and a foreigner at the same time i am unaware of the business part of it.What are the important things that i should look at,i also want to know about the average remuneration and also which production companies to go for.

Answer
First let me apologize for not getting back to you sooner; I've been ill.

Before I can add any new information, please go back to my answer archives and search for all relevant terms, such as "script," "screenplay," "selling," "agent," "get an agent," "getting an agent," "representation," that sort of thing.  Or just browse the answer and cherry-pick the ones that may seem helpful.

I advise this because the question you are asking is, of course, the single most frequently-asked question I receive, and really The Major Question of screenwriting, along with "How do I write a screenplay?"  You should know that selling a script by an unpublished, first-time writer is practically impossible.  Much better are the odds that you can use this script as a sample to get yourself representation, which may lead to business being transacted.  However, there are exceptions.  First-time scripts have been sold and will be sold again, and it doesn't cost you anything but a little time to get a better idea of what the business is like by browsing my dozens of previous answers.

Your question is so large, you might also want to browse book selections at a site such as writersstore.com.  In other words, the answer could -- and does -- fill a book.

After all this, feel free to follow up with me.  Thanks, and hope this helps.

Roger
