Writing Plays/Screenwriting - title in query letter

Expert: Barry Pearson - 10/13/2009

Question
QUESTION: Good Day,

I am using the Hollywood Creative Directory and am getting alot of contacts for sending my letters, however I'm a little confused as to "no unsolicited material/submission accepted", does this mean primarily for scripts or letters in general. I saw a few of them marked "by lawyers and agents only" and I understand that, but "unsolicited material" is leaving me a little confused. Does it mean I can't even send a letter or should I still bite my lip and send it to the appropriate person anyway?

Any thoughts?

Thanks again and I appreciate your help, it has been...well...helpful.

Cheers.

ANSWER: Hi Rick

The phrase "no unsolicited material/submission accepted" means that they're not producing anything from outside sources.  Don't send anything to them.  It's a waste of your time.

Best,

Barry

QUESTION: Good Day,

Hate to be of a bother, but I've formulated my query letter and was wondering if the title has to be included. I know it's probably a sill question but I've seen letters which great synopses with actually naming the title. My description speaks for itself, but is it a must to do it. Also where is the best place to put it, the logline or at the start of the synopsis.

Thanks

Answer
Hi Rick,

There aren't any hard and fast, rigid rules about query letters.  But you should use your common sense.  You must include the title somewhere.

You can say, for example, "My screenplay FEAR OF THE QUERY LETTER, is a slapstick comedy about the movie business and one writer's adventures, when he submits his work to a Hollywood producer who is certifiably insane."

Also, I realize that your question was probably written in haste, but the typos and missing words make it hard to understand. (You meant "silly" not "sill"  and you meant to say, "...letters WITH great synopses THAT DIDN'T actually name the title.)  I hope you will scour your query letters to eliminate such errors.

Best of luck with your marketing,

Barry
