Writing Plays/Screenwriting - Gross V Net

Expert: Barry Pearson - 5/14/2009

Question
I am just entering into the industry and I am currently in
the preliminaries of building my team: (1)LAWYER,
(2)MANAGER, (3)AGENT — all of whom work off percentages
from gross income.  After (4)TAXES I am calculating that I
will be able to look forward to roughly a 40% take-home.

I am writing you to see if there is any tool or application
out there that can take a given TAKE-HOME amount and, with
the various four percentages mentioned above, calculate the
necessary GROSS INCOME to achieve the desired take-home.  I
am certain professionals utilize something of this nature
without necessarily going to their calculator and/or agent
every time.  Could you please direct me to such a tool or
application?  It would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hi Dial,

I can't really give you cogent advice until I know a lot about how and with what you plan to "enter the entertainment industry."  Are you going to enter as a writer, producer, director, performer, financier, what?  And with what existing curriculum vitae (i.e. background resume).

I can tell you with great certainty that there is no tool to calculate gross income for screenwriters.

If you wish to pursue this issue, feel free to e-mail me at createyourscreenplay@rogers.com and give me detail so that I can advise you.

All the best,
Barry
