Question Hello. I am wishing to turn a published series of books into 1 or more screenplays. I only want to write the screenplays, not produce the films. My question is this-what are the protocols in this venture? Should I contact the author directly, or the publisher? Would I have to draw up a purchase/option agreement? I am not wanting to purchase the entire rights to film, I do not have access to that kind of capital, I just want to write the scripts. If I get the author's ok, could I write the script and then submit it to producers? Please let me know the steps I should take. I thank you in advance.
Answer Shye,
You should contact the author. If that fails,
for whatever reason, contact the publisher.
Any agreement should be drawn up by
an entertainment lawyer.
If you get the author's approval, make sure
it is in writing. Unless the publisher and/or
someone else has rights to the story, then,
you must get their approval as well. Once
this is accomplished, you could then write
the script and submit it to producers.
Be certain that you consult with an
entertainment lawyer so that you are
covering all of the bases.
I hope this has been of help to you.
