Writing Plays/Screenwriting - Screenplay from a book

Expert: Don Vasicek - 6/16/2009

Question
The book that I am interested in has been out of print for some time. The author, Edger Rice Burroughs dead for some time also. I've searched for some time for someone regarding the estate but no luck. Can you help with this info. Also is it always necessary to purchase the full rights to the book or can a deal be made otherwise? What is an "Option"? What is the least expensive way to go about this?  Thank you

Answer
Michael,

Without spending time researching, for which I would
have to charge, I am unable to help you with the book
questions.

I'm not an attorney, so I am unable to explain the next
question.

An option is a deal that is cut whereby the screenwriter
gives the producer (or someone else), and option to buy
the script if they decide to produce it.  Options like these
usually favor the producer, so be careful with this one.

The lease expensive way to go about this, if you're speaking
of money, is to everything yourself.

I hope this has been of help to you.
