Writing Plays/Screenwriting - copyrighting, publishing & marketing an original musical

Expert: Don Vasicek - 6/15/2009

Question
I have written a complete musical based on the book Pilgrim's Progress. It has been performed by a children's theatre group a few times and has received very good reviews from the public. I have written several other musicals, but feel this one is worthy of publication. Many people have asked for the soundtrack as well as script. What would be the best avenue to publish and market it?

Answer
Cynthia,

The first step would be to check into the rights
with the author/publisher for "Pilgrim's Progress"
to see what they will allow you to do, or to not
do regarding publication and marketing.

Once you get through that step and acquire
the rights to publication, then, you should seek
an agent to help you market it.  You can also
market it yourself by writing up a powerful
query letter and sending it to appropriate
publishers.  You should also write up a short
script to utilize by cold calling agents and
publishers to pitch your project.

I hope this has been of help to you.
