Question
What is the choir that provides dramatic movie backgrounds? The songs without words, just dramatic chords that make mediocre scenes seem epic? Is it a style of music or a certain division of choirs?

Thanks!

Answer
Hello,

This is not my exactly area of expertise, but I do know a little about it, and I did some extra research for you.   Also, it depends what you are using the music for.  If you are just making something for private use, or for promotional use on a small scale, you should be able to use whatever music appeals to you.

Here are some of the options I know:

1.  Cheapest option is to write music and use a synthesizer.  Many keyboards have "choir" option.   It doesn't sound as full as what you might be hoping for, and there won't be words, but you may get something close.

2.  Write your music and hire your own choir.  Many church choirs can be hired out.  I've had several friends do this very successfully.

3.  Royalty-free music - several libraries exist.   Search on the internet.  Even Moby offers free music - http://www.mobygratis.com/film-music.html

4.  Buying music- plenty of music exists, but most of it you have to pay for, and it can be extremely costly.  If there is something in particular that you want, make a request to the publisher, and let them know the size of your production.  I believe the cost can often be negotiable.

I hope this helps.

Good luck,
Beth
