I am ready to send out my query letters to potential buyers of my screenplay but fin the Hollywood Creative Directory very expensive. I tried shopping around for a second hand (more recent) version, but the price is still quite high. I understand that this directory is the best way to find names of persons to which you can address query letters to in a particular company. I'm not sure if you're the right person to ask but is there any other literary work or website where I can find the specified names of those who will read my query letters? Or should I send a general letter and they will then put it in the appropriate file to the appropriate persons?
Thanks.
ANSWER: Hi Rick,
Sorry, but there's nothing equivalent to the HCD. They have the corner on this market. Bite the bullet and buy if you really want to be serious about querying. General queries usually find their way quickly to the round file (garbage can).
Good luck with your query.

Thanks for the advice. I had a feeling you would day that about the Hollywood Creative Directory, and I may have to shell out some bucks for it. However, I was wondering about phone calls. Can I call some of these companies to find out who is the appropriate persons to address my query letter? What sort of titles would they have, can you advise me? Or would calling seem too amateurish? Any additional help is appreciated.
Thank you.
Answer Hi Rick,
Sure you can phone. Have your questions down pat, and keep it short. The persons who deal with development have various titles. You'll be able to narrow it down yourself when you plow through the HCD.
Head of Creative Development is a probable title, or Development Officer (co-ordinator, etc.)
Remember that a large number of production entities and persons will not accept anything sent by the writer. They require submissions by agents and lawyers only.
Some of these same people do browse around in posting sites such as inktip.com You might consider that a part of your marketing strategy.
