Question I began writing a short story some time ago. Now that I've retired I would like to finish it up. I began the story and made up a short list of topics that i will want as part of the story. I realize that i have to finish the piece but my question(s) are:
(A) Is it advisable to have someone read my story for suggestions on how to make the piece more acceptable for publication?
(B) What can be done to insure that if someone is hired to help does not steal my work?
Answer Joseph,
First of all, I wouldn't hire someone to read your story. But yes, it is advisable to have someone you trust read your story and give suggestions. You might try to find a writer's group in your area. A good place to start is the local bookstore or the local community colleges. There are also writer's groups online that have critiquing groups.
Copyright law protects you from someone else stealing your work. If you're really worried about it, you can mail yourself a copy of the manuscript and keep it stored away unopened. If someone steals your idea, you have proof of your story and the date you mailed it.
