Subject: Publishing an assignment for a class
Question I was wondering if it was possible to get an assignment, written for a college class, published, or if that would run afoul of any type of legal or copyright ownership problems that you know of. I know you are not a lawyer, but I figure you might have some knowledge in the appropriateness of getting an assignment published, or if the story would have to be modified to a certain degree
Answer Hi, Scott!
Well, if you wrote the assignment (I assume it's a short story or essay) and you want to publish it, I can't imagine any copyright laws you'd run afoul of. You're the author, after all. The only issue there MIGHT be is if your teacher made edits/corrections to the story during the grading process and you're wanting to include those changes in what you submit. See, the changes would belong to the teacher. You can submit the original, or if you get the teacher's permission (in writing,) however, you should be fine.
Now, that's not to say that there might be some sort of internal prohibition in your college guidelines, but if they're okay with it, I don't see any problem. But feel free to read up more about the copyright process right from the source. The U.S. Copyright Office has a TERRIFIC frequently asked questions page with a lot of these answers:

Does that help? :) Let me know if you have any other questions, and good luck with it!
