Writing Short Stories - feedback

Expert: Brian Lawrence - 9/3/2004

Question
I read somewhere that a writer should never pay for feedback on his/her work. But where can a writer get constructive criticism? I have heard that editors are too busy these days.
Personally I wouldn't mind paying but there are so many critique services how do you know which one to choose and also they are rather expensive – so what is a writer to do?!

Answer
Lyn,

There are good editors and there are scams. The problem is finding which is which. And yes, it is expensive. With a good editor, expect to pay $1 to $2 a page minimum.

The only way to find out who is good is to ask other writers who have used their services.

One piece of advice, watch out if an agent recommends an editorial service. This is usually a scam.

Another way to go is to find a critique group. There are many online. Also, try your local community college or 4 year college if you have one. Also, there may be writers groups in your area. Ask around at bookstores, especially the larger ones like B&N and Borders. They may be able to point you to a writing group.

I hope this helps.

Brian.
