QuestionWe are renting every season on DVD... and are now in the middle of season 5. I would like to know when the 1st movie came out, before or after season 6? They're both from 1998. Also, just curious as to when the 2nd movies coming?
Answer Hi there Sandy.
You've picked a great point to ask about the movie. The first movie comes straight after the end of the 5th season, you should watch it before you rent season 6. Originally, the movie was filmed between the 4th and 5th season (meaning no break for cast and crew for 2 years!) for release after the final episode of season 5 "The End" was aired in the US.
As for the next movie. It has ultimately been on the cards since the show ended 5 years ago. For said years we have heard info in dribs and drabs. We know that it will be a stand alone film, nothing to do with aliens or a government conspiracy. They want to make a really scary movie with the characters and I believe they might pull it off. Apparently the story was written almost straight after the show ended.
Initially, the problem with getting together for the movie was that cast and crew had just come off the show and didn't want to get into another movie, they wanted to make the fans thirst for it.
Now, it appears they're going to go for it. David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson and several other cast members have done their deals with Fox and are wanting to get back together to make a film. However, the show's creator Chris Carter has a want to direct the next movie himself, having never directed a major feature before. Fox don't want him as director. Plus, although the story has been written, Carter refuses to write the script until his deal is done with Fox, they want to see a script before they greenlight the project.
More problems recently when Carter announced he was suing Fox over syndication rights of the series, so they're aren't exactly on good terms. However, Fox does want to make the movie, they are incredibly pleased with how the DVDs are selling millions of copies still and they think there is definitely an audience out there.
The other executive producer Frank Spotnitz says he doesn't know what's holding them back now. Just red tape. It looks as though the film will not begin production till at least 2007 for 2008 release. However, there is still hope.
Hope that helps, any more questions, just let me know!
