Expert: Capt Lou Date: 4/20/2008 Subject: Best, safest, route from Marblehead to Palm Beach
Question Hello, My husband and I are in the process of buying a 48' trawler and will be living aboard for 3-5 years. The boat is in Marblehead, and we will eventually get it down to florida for winters in the Bahamas.
While we have owned boats before, we have never been on the East coast. Can you please give me in your opinion on the best, and safest way to Florida. We will stay out of Hurricane zone until November, but other than that, we have no deadlines. Thanks so much, Sharon
Answer Enjoy the scenery and go the Intracoastal Waterway the whole way from Norfolk, Virginia to Florida. In many instances, the waterway is also the shortest route. If you were in a faster boat, then you would save time running in and out of the ocean, but in a trawler, the ICW is the way to go! From Boston to Virginia, I would go in a straight line
from Block Island to Atlantic City if the weather and sea cooperates. Otherwise, I would stay along the coast in deep water.
Bon voyage!
