Subject: Boat Sales Tax

Question
If you buy a boat in Rhode Island and immediately take it to North Carolina what are the tax implications. I understand there is no sales tax in Rhode Island. Is this correct? I understand there is a "use tax" in North Carolina. How does that work?

Answer
There is no "sales tax" on boats sold in Rhode Island.

I am not familiar with North Carolina laws, but I thought North Carolina was a "boater friendly" state. Didn't NC boat dealers advertise "$100 maximum sales tax" on new boats sold?

In states that have a "user tax," there usually is a time frame, 60 or 90 or 180 days, for the user tax liability to occur.

If you purchased a new boat in Rhode Island, it would be a used boat in North Carolina if there is an excise tax!

Unfortunately, many states have many different kinds of taxes. And don;t forget about the "fees".......... mooring, license, saltwater fishing, and federal water discharge fees.
