Question I have a few basic questions regarding my vessel, a 1981 steel trawler with 46' , 16ft beam, 77,000NET
I wanted to remove the existing steel mast and boom that are on top of my upper structure/pilot house.
A friend thought that I should have someone that has knowledge of stability, review my decision to remove the vessel's mast and boom.
I never use the mast/boom and the former owner never used it. It would free up a large area near the dingy on the aft deck. I am not sure that it is has a positive effect since the boat weighs about 77,000.
I have no idea as to a dampening effect on roll even without sail. It is obvious at that height, it must have some effect on the vessels rolling motion. I guess similar to perhaps the way a de-masted sailboat may react.
It is just after so many years of neglect, that I wonder if it is worth the expense to update, replace the rigging, and have a sail made.

Answer Sails on motorsailers were designed to prevent rolling and/or capsizing. Using the sail could also extend the vessels cruising range, allowing the motor to be turned off. I have read that spars on a mast add to a boat's stability. Therefore, I would not remove your vessel's mast. Furthermore, I believe you would be decrease the value of your vessel by removing the mast.
